This beach is known as the Machair which means, common land, and is on the western side of the Isle of Iona. This is the island where Saint Columba established his community after being exiled from Ireland. This community of Celtic monks relaunched Christianity in ancient Britain after the withdrawal of the Romans from our shores. These monks took the Gospel throughout Europe as far as Russia so the text, originally spoken to Abraham, seems quite appropriate.

This is a view of Loch Linnhe which is a sea loch that cuts deep into the western side of Scotland. It is this along this waterway that Saint Columba would have travelled on his journey to meet with King Brude of the Picts at his castle near Inverness where he would seek and receive permission to establish his community on Iona. In the distance, just left of center, can be seen Scotland's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. On a day such as this you could well imagine that you were approaching Heaven.

This is a view of Loch Linnhe facing south from Kilmalieu taken from the headland known as the Lion Rock. On such a day as this it is easy to forget that, in a winter gale, it would be barely possible to stand upright in such an exposed position.

This is the bay at Kilmalieu looking onto the Lion Rock which is visited by many Americans each year. Well passing through might be a better way to put it. They pass through at 500 miles an hour and at 150 feet, usually in an F15!!!
